• Maps on the impact of global warming in Puerto Rico

    El Informe de 2007 del Grupo Intergubernamental sobre Cambio Climático (“IPCC”, por sus siglas en inglés), evaluó las consecuencias del calentamiento global sobre diferentes aspectos del planeta y su impacto sobre la sociedad humana hasta el año 2100. El aumento en el nivel del mar fue uno de los impactos que el IPCC estudio como parte de este fenómeno. El IPCC concluyó que el nivel del mar aumentará entre 28 a 58 centímetros (11 a 23 pulgadas) en promedio a través del planeta. Sin embargo, el IPCC no descartó que este aumento pudiese alcanzar hasta un (1) metro (39 pulgadas) de altura, ya que entre otras razones, sus estimados no incorporaban el efecto del derretimiento y desplazamiento de las masas de hielo en Groenlandia y la Antártica.

    Following this report, the international scientific community has published a large number of studies that have incorporated the potential contribution of ice melting and displacement in these regions of the planet, refining sea level rise projections. As a result, over the past two years, a projection of at least one (1) meter (3.28 feet) of sea level rise has gained momentum as an expected scenario, without ruling out the possibility of as much as 3 meters (9.84 feet) of sea level rise over the same time period. See Appendix A at the end of this document for references to these studies.

    As a result of the 2006 IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) report, CDK, with the advice of Aurelio Mercado PhD from UPR Mayagüez, commissioned a study to evaluate the possible impacts on human infrastructure of sea rise in three different scenarios - 1 meter rise, 2 meters rise and 3 meters rise. Five coastal municipalities were selected, San Juan Metro Area reaching from Carolina to Toa Baja, Ponce, Mayaguez, Arecibo and Salinas.
