Celebrating 30 Years of Citizens of Karso: A Story of Struggle and Hope for the Protection of the Environment

By Evelyn Moreno, Founder of Citizens of Karso

This year, we proudly celebrate the 30th anniversary of Ciudadanos del Karso (CDK), an organization committed to the defense of Puerto Rican karso. Our history is a chronicle of determination and a firm commitment to the protection of our environment. Since our inception, we have faced significant challenges, but our mission has remained constant: to preserve the natural and cultural richness of Puerto Rico’s karso.

Origins of educational work:

CDK’s story begins in 1994, when a group of visionaries came together to address the growing threats facing our karst. With its ecological diversity and vital aquifers, this region is an invaluable resource for the island. However, urban sprawl, pollution and lack of awareness have threatened its existence. It was in this context that we decided to act.

From the beginning, we have worked tirelessly to raise awareness about the importance of karst and the need for its protection. Through environmental education campaigns, workshops and community activities, we have empowered citizens to become active defenders of their environment.

Achievements and projects

Throughout these 30 years, CDK has achieved significant milestones in karst conservation. Among our most outstanding projects are:

1. Research and Environmental Monitoring: We have conducted exhaustive studies on karst biodiversity, collaborating with universities and experts in the field. This information has been fundamental to advocate for public policies that protect our natural resources.

2. Environmental Education Programs: Through educational initiatives with schools and communities, we have impacted thousands of people, promoting the importance of caring for the karst and its resources.

3. Conservation Actions: We have led campaigns for the reforestation of degraded areas, restoring habitats and promoting biodiversity in the region.

4- We promote, with our voluntary collaboration, governmental regulations for the conservation of the natural systems that sustain us and provide us with a habitable space.

Looking to the Future

As we celebrate 30 years of educational work, we recognize that much remains to be done. Climate change, spatial planning and biodiversity loss continue to threaten one of our most important natural systems: the Karso. That is why we remain committed to our mission of protection and education.

We invite all Puerto Ricans to join our cause. Each one of us can make a difference in karst conservation. Whether through participation in volunteer activities, donations or simply educating yourself about the issue, your contribution is valuable.

At Citizens of Karso, we believe that the protection of natural systems is everyone’s responsibility. We thank every member, volunteer, collaborator and ally who has been part of our history. Together, we have built a legacy of love and respect for nature, and we are ready to face the challenges to come.

Let’s celebrate 30 years of achievements and keep fighting for Puerto Rican karso!
