Solidarity, legacy, and commitment to Puerto Rico
This article reflects the words shared by Ciudadanos del Karso in honor of the life, work, and legacy of Lourdes Miranda, founder of the Miranda Foundation, whose passing on December 5, 2025, leaves a profound void, yet an enduring mark on Puerto Rico’s culture of solidarity.
A life committed to solidarity
Lourdes Miranda understood, perhaps before many others, that solidarity is not an isolated act but a sustained commitment to human dignity, social justice, and the empowerment of those who work quietly for the common good. Her vision went beyond one-time donations. She invested in organizations, in processes, and in causes that build the future.
The Solidarity Award and its meaning
In 2015, Ciudadanos del Karso had the honor of receiving the Miranda Foundation Solidarity Award. For our organization, which has dedicated more than three decades to the research, education, and conservation of Puerto Rico’s karst landscape, this recognition was far more than an award.
It was a powerful affirmation that protecting nature, educating communities, and thinking long-term are also profound acts of solidarity with the country and with future generations.
Trust as part of her legacy
That award represented trust. Trust in rigorous work, in science serving the common good, and in the belief that environmental conservation is essential and inseparable from social well-being. That trust remains a central part of Lourdes Miranda’s legacy.
A commitment that endures
As we remember her today, we reaffirm our commitment to honoring her memory through concrete actions: working with integrity, social awareness, and a vision of a country that does not exclude, does not fragment, and recognizes the value of collective effort.
May this remembrance be not only an act of reflection, but also an act of continuity. May the work of Lourdes Miranda live on in every project that supports solidarity, in every organization that strengthens communities, and in every person who chooses to serve with generosity and purpose.
